Remember to back up your data!
How would you feel if you worked really hard editing a video and then your computer crashes and you lose all your hard work? This happens more than you’d think. And this applies to not only your edited pieces but also your photos and documents. I’m willing to bet that the majority of people, including myself, don’t have a separate PC/Mac that is used ONLY for video editing. You probably use one computer for video, storing your family photos and documents. Well, guess what? If your hard drive fails, all these things will be gone forever!
So what can you do to avoid this? There are various options. You can purchase an external hard drive… hell, buy two, and backup your stuff to those. You can also burn a DVD-R (or more, depending on how much stuff you’re backing up) every week, keeping it in a safe place. If you’re even more paranoid, you can backup your stuff and then take the external drive or DVD-Rs to a friend’s house or to your workplace and store them there in case of a fire, flood or earthquake. And if you’re lazy, or forgetful, you can purchase software that will automatically backup your files. You really have no excuse for not having a backup plan.
I’m telling you this from experience. I have lost stuff due to hard drive failures. Thankfully, I have the technical knowledge to recover stuff from drives should Windows decide to freak out on me. But, recovery isn’t always 100% successful and it only works on specific failures. You won’t recover stuff from a fire or flood without paying thousands of dollars to a professional data recovery company, and even then, a full recovery isn’t guaranteed.
